A new BAM Music CD with Alberto Franchetti’s music

The opera composer Alberto Franchetti was born in 1860 in Turin, Italy. He focused his work mainly on operatic composition, actualy some of whose works were performed by the great tenor Enrico Caruso for his first commercial recording with a lot of success.

His first major success occurred in 1888 with his opera Asrael, followed in 1892 by Cristoforo Colombo, which many consider to be Franchetti’s best work, but his most popular opera is Germania(1902) with libretto by Luigi Illica. It clung to the general operatic repertoire until the First World War; it was performed worldwide and Arturo Toscanini -who conducted the opera at the Teatro alla Scala- and Caruso held it high regard.

In addition to his operatic work, Franchetti he composed masterpieces of an instrumental nature, a selection of this music the pianist Marcello Mazzoni decided to record it for his new album “Chamber Music” with the collaboration of the violinist Silvia Mazzon and his colleague, the pianist Giulio Potenza.

The first single from the album is an arrangement of the Symphony in E minor for piano 4 hands: “Allegro un poco agitato” with Marcello Mazzoni and Giulio Potenza at the piano.

BIOGRAPHY – MARCELLO MAZZONI: Marcello Mazzoni was born in Reggio Emilia, he graduated the Monteverdi’s Conservatory in Bolzano and continued his intensive studies at the Imola Academy. He has given recitals and concerts in Italy and abroad, in 2018 Marcello Mazzoni has participated in a lot of prestigious projects like the tournée of Wiener Concert-Verein with whom he performed concertos from the Mozart repertoire in Italian and European Theatres. In 2013 he was named permanent member of the Steinway Artists, together with notable musicians such as Vladimir Horowitz, Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini.
